Faith, Spirituality Or Psychic Progression:
When this card appears in reverse in relation to spirituality, old messages we received as children can be coming back to haunt us. This is especially true for those raised in fundamentalist or evangelical religions. Examine your long-held beliefs and see if they withstand the light of day. Ideally spirituality is a process and a growth. Concepts that were complete enough when you were twelve years old may not be so complete today. Do not hesitate to reach out and study with others- consider their spiritual points of view and see what rings true for you.
Card Meanings: Discontentment, Useless Sacrifice, False Prophecy, Unwillingness, Impulsiveness, Apathy, Disinterest, Stagnation, Negative Patterns
The Hanged Man generally shows that you are at a crossroads – one with only two options i.e. in or out, up or down, yes or no. You may find yourself very much wanting to do ‘something’ but having no idea what it is or how to do it. If that happens, that’s a clear sign that you should stop, relax, and look at ways that you might need to let go of attempts to control life/situations/people/things.

Reversed Cards: The Hanged Man in the protection aspect is an interesting point of meditation all by itself. I mean, what on earth could the Hanged Man be protecting you from? Is he concerned that perhaps you are not ready to make your way back to the throngs of your daily life? Or does he feel you have yet to fully understand the difference between escapism and enlightenment? Remember, the Hanged Man walks the path of the three, the number with no middle ground. This is the number of extremes, so trying to find your way with this number is always going to be difficult. Which may be why you have received this card in the protection aspect. You may need to consider what spiritual practices you are currently doing and be open and honest about how they are enhancing or serving your daily life. Are they acting as ways to keep you distracted or detached? Or are they truly making you feel more and more connected in a heart-centered way to the world around you? Part of the reason we walk a spiritual path is to feel more connection, more inner peace, and above all more love. If you are not feeling these growing in your life, then now is the time to evaluate your current practices.
Tarot Triumphs: This kind of process may be mirrored to some degree in your own use of Tarot, in that it will evolve and be shaped by your own life experiences. Your personal relationship with the cards may be modified over the years. My first encounter, as I’ve described, was with the Rider-Waite pack, a vividly-colored and fully pictorial set of suits and Trumps all heavily imbued with esoteric symbolism. I marveled at it, was transported by it even. However, after a period of research and decades of using Tarot cards, this has evolved into a quieter sense of affection and respect for that particular pack, while on the other hand my interest in the symbolism of the Major Arcana of the Marseilles pack has grown and proved to be a more lasting flame. This is my Tarot of choice, and it is the version I feature in this book. It is the closest representation we have of the core of the Tarot tradition, and for this reason it remains a classic and, to my mind, offers the best way to try to understand the essence of Tarot.

Reversed Cards: Regardless of whether they are sharp or blunt, swords are designed to hurt. In inexperienced hands, you have to be careful what sort of harm your page can do. The problem with young, rebellious energy is that it often goes off half-cocked, and here in the shadow aspect, you dont really seem to care who gets hurt. Just remember that a sword can do just as much harm to the person wielding it as it can to the intended target. So be very careful when this card shows up in the shadow aspect of your reading or daily draw.
