The deck of cards known as the tarot is divided into two parts: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana consists of 22 cards, each separately titled. The Minor Arcana is a combination of four suits; each suit is comprised of cards numbered from one to ten, plus court cards of Page, Knight, Queen and
King. The four suits of the Minor Arcana are most commonly known as Cups, Pentacles, Wands and Swords. Each suit of the Minor Arcana has a meaning. Traditionally the swords indicate ill fortune or difficulties, the pentacles indicate financial and material success, the cups indicate good fortune and love and the wands indicate enterprise and knowledge.

Here are some snippets from a few of my favorite books
Complete Book of Tarot: When reversed, the Magician may be using his willpower, knowledge and skills for less than honorable purposes. An ill-dignified Magician may be engaged in deception, manipulation, or the misuse of power. He may be weak-willed or lacking in confidence and thus fail to use his communication skills in a productive manner. When the Magician appears reversed in a reading, it is wise to explore what is preventing you from maintaining the mental focus that will enable you to act like a magician in your life.
Complete Book of Tarot: Major arcana count as 12 for cards assigned to signs of the zodiac, 9 for the ones assigned to planets, and 3 for those assigned to the elements.
Complete Book of Tarot: One-card readings are limited in scope because a single card does not give a sense of the flow of events. To get an inkling of how matters will progress, it is usually necessary to pull two or more cards. The following is an example of a two-card reading.
