In the cosmological model upon which the Tarot correspondences of the Golden Dawn are based, the higher elements, Fire, Air, and Water, lie in bands between the sphere of the fixed Earth and the higher moving spheres of the heavens. They partake of both earthly and heavenly qualities. They are above the surface of the earthly sphere, yet they have lower, earthly counterparts that function within the sphere of Earth. Tarot Triumphs: The Marseilles version of the Lover clearly indicates a choice: which woman will the young man decide to marry? Some earlier versions, notably the fifteenth-century Visconti-Sforza pack, show what appears to be a wedding in progress; and in that particular case, the figures are presumed to be Francesco Sforza and Bianca Maria Visconti. The couple married in 1441, and the sumptuous set of Tarot cards may have actually been commissioned for their wedding.20 But the dilemma shown on the prevailing image in the Marseilles Triumph is not a straightforward, happy union; as with many of the cards, it poses a question for us to fathom.
