The deck of cards known as the tarot is divided into two parts: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana consists of 22 cards, each separately titled. The Minor Arcana is a combination of four suits; each suit is comprised of cards numbered from one to ten, plus court cards of Page, Knight, Queen and
King. The four suits of the Minor Arcana are most commonly known as Cups, Pentacles, Wands and Swords. Each suit of the Minor Arcana has a meaning. Traditionally the swords indicate ill fortune or difficulties, the pentacles indicate financial and material success, the cups indicate good fortune and love and the wands indicate enterprise and knowledge.

Here are some snippets from a few of my favorite books
Complete Book of Tarot: As you read the above interpretations, keep in mind that these comments represent merely my own impressions in the context of the question. If you have other insights or gut feelings about how these cards may answer the question, your views are equally as valid as mine and deserve respect for the wisdom that they contain. Sir Francis Bacon (15611626) advised us always to pay attention to thoughts that come unbidden, for they are often the most valuable.
Complete Book of Tarot: When upright, the High Priest is a wise, spiritually oriented guide to whom the querent has recourse. This person may be a kindly teacher, a mentor, or a spiritual adviser, not infrequently connected with a religious or academic setting. One role of the Hierophant is to perform sacred rites that pass traditional wisdom on to the next generation. The High Priest often officiates at ceremonies such as weddings, baptisms, bar mitzvahs, funerals, and the like. Because this priestly figure has authority to unite (hook) couples in matrimony, this card can be a harbinger of marriage. In any case, when the Hierophant appears in a reading, you are likely to be dealing with the traditional values of your family, culture, or religion.
Complete Book of Tarot: Waite (1911): He holds a short scepter in his left hand and a great cup in his right; his throne is set upon the sea; on one side a ship is riding and on the other a dolphin is leaping. The implicit is that the sign of the Cup naturally refers to water, which appears in all the court cards. Divinatory Meanings: Fair man, man of business, law, or divinity; responsible, disposed to oblige the querent; also equity, art, and science, including those who profess science, law, and art; creative intelligence; (R) dishonest, double-dealing man; roguery, exaction, injustice, vice, scandal, pillage, considerable loss.
