Career, Work Or Retirement:
There may be disputes coming up at work if you are currently employed when this card appears. If so, think calmly and rationally and avoid arguments to the best of your ability. Make sure you have protected yourself as well as you can, in terms of tracking your actions, having a paper trail, having witnesses during contentious discussions, and so forth. If you are looking for work, don’t be discouraged by the competition out there. You have your own unique talents to bring to the table. Think positively.

The Five of Wands often refers to competition. Usually this is in the career/work arena, but sometimes it can refer to romantic rivals. Don’t be afraid of competing, know that you have something to offer, and can be successful. But you have to try, to see results.

Tarot Triumphs: One issue with defining Tarot history is that it is not just a linear development, but has various offshoots and separate developments during its history. Just as the Silk Road was in fact a collection of branching routes, so Tarot history has its own highways and byways. For our purposes, however, we are following one of the major roads of the historical Tarot trail by focusing on the Marseilles Tarot. The twenty-two cards that I am using in this book became the main established set of Triumphs over the course of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and are now thought of as the ‘traditional’ version of Tarot. The generic name for this pack is the Marseilles Tarot, linking it to the place where many of these designs were produced, once Tarot had spread beyond Northern Italy, where its origins are thought to lie. But although Marseilles was one of the centers of Tarot production, this particular design also became widespread over a much bigger region in Europe, appearing elsewhere in France, and in similar or allied versions in Italy, Germany, and Switzerland in particular. There were some standard variations, especially that of swapping the High Priestess and the Pope for Juno and Jupiter in countries where any hint of Catholicism was distasteful. Another common ploy was to print double-ended packs, using just half of the existing image and presenting each picture in mirrored fashion, for the purpose of playing Tarot card games. Naturally, this produces an incomplete and much less powerful version of each Tarot symbol. An elite version of Tarot, known as the Minchiate pack, contains ninety-seven cards and has allegorical allusions; it is more philosophical, and less powerfully symbolic, in my view. And so the variations go on, along with regional and cultural differences. The suits of the actual playing cards have never been completely fixed either, so that the Germans may use leaves, acorns, and bells where French and English players have spades, clubs, and diamonds. Suits accompanying the Marseilles and other more traditional Tarot packs are usually designated as coins, cups, swords, and wands.

Reversed Cards: If this card is about liberation in its upright position, then could we hypothesize that here in the blocked aspect you would rather hang on to all your labels? Is there something about being forgiven or offering up forgiveness that just doesnt sit well with you in this current situation? Just remember that here in the blocked aspect, the tighter you hold on to this energy and keep it from flowing, the more harm you will end up causing yourself. All that anger, resentment, and fear will quickly turn on you and start to manifest in your physical body. You have to ask yourself if holding on so tight is really worth the price you will end up paying.
