Tarot Triumphs: The corresponding card from one of the earliest known Tarot sets, the Visconti-Sforza, has a piquant series of sayings written in Latin. The first three translate as ‘I shall reign,’ ‘I am reigning,’ and ‘I have reigned.’ These are emblazoned on ribbons attached to figures on the wheel. In this particular depiction of the image, a fourth figure, an old man, is placed under the wheel, declaring piteously, ‘I have no reign.’ The Marseilles version just has three figures on the wheel, transmuted into comic figures that mock man’s attempt to outwit fortune by imagining themselves great: three monkeys are in rotation, the one who rises up is wearing donkey’s ears, and the one at the top sports a crown.
