Career, Work Or Retirement:

Card Meanings: Hastiness, Withdrawal, Rashness, Paranoia, Isolation, Foolishness, Immaturity, Loneliness, Imprudence, being reclusive, Restrictive, Anti-Social

This is a lovely card, but one which can often be misunderstood. You’ll sometimes see him interpreted to indicate loneliness, withdrawal or isolation – and it’s true that his appearance can mean those things. But at an inner level, the mystery of the Hermit is much more spiritual and re-assuring….for he symbolises the withdrawal into one’s own centre point, where the directions of the still inner voice may be clearly heard and interpreted. The Hermit lives in the quiet place we retreat to when we meditate, or dream. He is the philosopher within, the spiritual guide who leads us to the higher realms. Through him we touch our Higher Self, and the wealth of energy and power in the Universe. On a day ruled by the Hermit, spend time resting in your own centre – meditate – let your mind wonder. If you have not yet found the place you feel is your centre, and believe me….you know it when you find it, then practise exploring yourself a little.

Sit down comfortably, close your eyes, and look inwardly at yourself. Observe your thoughts as though they were external to you. If you do not like what you find then throw it away! It’s often the case in the early stages of this procedure people find several things they aren’t happy with…..but for every unhelpful, critical or murky rock you mentally throw away, new growth will spring up in its place. Eventually you’ll discover that thoughts are tools that we invest with far too much importance a lot of the time…they are peripheral, and often interfere with growth. Behind them reside your dreams, hopes, aspirations, needs, emotions and your soul…… In readings, the Hermit often suggests a need for time alone – a period of reflection when distractions are limited. In times of action and high energy, he stands for the still center that must be created for balance. He can also indicate that withdrawal or retreat is advised for the moment.

The Hermit can represent seeking of all kinds, also a deeper understanding of a situation. “Seek, and ye shall find,” we are told, and so he stands for guidance too. We can receive help from wise teachers, and, in turn, help others as we progress.

Development for Beginners: Step 6: Using the present tense, say your goal out loud. For example, ‘My telepathic abilities are at the optimal level,’ or ‘I got promoted at work’ – not all of your goals have to relate specifically to the development of your psychic abilities.

Complete Book of Tarot: Etteilla (1791): A cleric, priest, nun, virgin, cloistered person, ecclesiastic, recluse, unmarried person; devotion, celibacy, piety, a cult, a convent, monastery, hermitage; (R) reasonable suspicion, warranted mistrust, legitimate fear, a troubled conscience, timidity, shame, disgrace.

Tarot for Beginners: Eventually, the Tarot came to interest British occultists of the 19th and early 20th centuries, who were influenced by the ideas of the French. In particular, the cards interested members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, an organization that heavily influenced modern occultism in many ways.

Tarot Triumphs: The Hermit follows his own path, but in accordance with values of a higher order. He is solitary, but he may impart his knowledge to someone who truly seeks it. The Hermit represents individuality, patience, frugality, and steadfastness. He can also signify poverty or making do with very little. Aloneness, but not necessarily loneliness, is a keynote here.
