    The Thoth Tarot The Eight’s

The number Eight in the Tarot deck describes boundaries, limitations and situations that are inherently intractable. As we search and seek and gain desire for things to be a certain way, we often ignore boundaries. It is good to know your limitations and accept what can and cannot be done. Those who resonate with the vibration of eight are extremely successful – particularly in business where success relies on a period of time that allows progress to unfold. These people see trends and the bigger picture, and are able to ride a wave to their great gain. If the eights could be described in one word it would be ‘action.’ These cards illustrate moments of dedication, movement, and commitment. Often growth-oriented, the eights show us how deciding to put our noses down and do the work can be in turns satisfying, galvanizing, and intimidating.

The Thoth Tarot Suit of Cups

The Suit of Cups deals with the emotional level of consciousness and is associated with love, feelings, relationships and connections. Cups are about displays of emotion, expression of feelings and the role of emotions in relation to others. The Cups Tarot cards indicate that you are thinking with your heart rather than your head, and thus reflect your spontaneous responses and your habitual reactions to situations. Cups are also linked to creativity, romanticism, fantasy and imagination. The negative aspects of the Suit of Cups (i.e. when the Cups cards appear reversed) include being overly emotional or completely disengaged and dispassionate, having unrealistic expectations and fantasising about what could be. There may be repressed emotions, an inability to truly express oneself and a lack of creativity. The Suit of Cups traditionally represents the west and autumn. If using an ordinary deck of playing cards, Cups are represented by the Suit of Hearts.

The magnificent Thoth Tarot Deck contains the Kabbalistic and astrological attributions described in Aleister Crowleys Book Of Thoth. It is known for its striking beauty, as well as its depiction of an understanding of the occult that was gathered over a lifetime of study. In 1773 Antoine Court de Gébelin claimed that Egyptian priests coded the Book of Thoth into the images of the tarot.

Tarot Triumphs: Insights about the nature of the card may come to you during the day too. Write those down if you can, or make a mental note and record them later. You may be surprised how synchronicities can crop up, linking the day’s experiences to the qualities of the cards. I decided to refresh my connection with the cards by doing this exercise myself while writing this book, and during my progression through the images I noted quite a number of these symbolic occurrences. The day I was studying the Tower, for instance, part of my tooth broke off, causing a jagged rift rather like that of lightning rupturing the Tower. The day I was pondering Temperance, I happened to visit a water mill and found myself listening to the sound of water going through a millrace, another kind of controlled outpouring. You could argue that one can find associations in the external world with whatever card is chosen for that day. Perhaps this is true; but even if they are not always startling coincidences, we can use what life throws up to help illuminate the spirit of the cards.
